Elvis Presley: The Power of the Archetype of the Lover

August 16, 2017

A great example of the power of this archetype can be found in the following clip from Elvis Presley. He died 40 years ago today.

This video was made in August of 1970 and Elvis is still in his prime. At one point he walks off the stage and starts hugging and kissing women in the crowd.

An archetype is a universal pattern or concept that resides in the collective unconscious and is manifested in individuals and in society. In their book King, Warrior, Magician, Lover: Rediscovering the Archetypes of the Mature Masculine, Robert Moore and Doug Gilette present four archetypes as the main ones in the human psyche. One of them is the Lover, a central archetype in Elvis Presley's life.

The archetype of the Lover is characterized by the Feeling function that appreciates, values, loves and cares. The Lover is also characterized by Eros. In Greek mythology he is the God of Love and considered to be the force behind connecting people in relationships.

Have a look at this unique video of Elvis, it is a great demonstration of how powerful this archetype really is. The audience just goes gaga over Elvis.
